    Do you have the raw DV for this? I think we can recover the 60fps interlaced information. (Also: Did you use S-Video or was it really VHS?) I used that exact Canopus for years but there's probably better results with 4K gear, which weirdly works better thanks to all the tricks from the last 20 years of upscaling. The Last Best Solution has also just arrived: "vhs-decode", the ultimate final digitizer.

      It kinda lived on. There was a Firewire 1600 and I think 3200 spec created, but I don't think anyone really adopted it. By then USB was way faster and although it had its own limitations it didn't matter when it was 5x the speed.

    • @dustmighte
      @dustmighte 2 месяца назад

      Thunderbolt is sort of the descendant no? Firewire was so much nicer to use than USB back then since it offloaded protocol negotiation to dedicated hardware... it also had licencing fees attached I think... hence the prices.

    These things were selling for $9000 at a time when most people had a Commodore 64 that went for $300. Development continued at such speed that by 1994 these machines were worthless. It's amazing how prices of technology always collapse; companies make up for it by customers buying and re-buying.

    Just within a few short years, MacOS and Windows would switch kernels and Apple would get a complete restructuring of the company once Steve Jobs returned to Apple. This was a very interesting time for computers, where Windows (except NT 3.1-2000) was running the DOS kernel and MacOS had a nanokernel instead of the Darwin kernel they use now. Here are the points they attacked Windows and here are my thoughts. Windows 95 was much less stable when running under DOS since it used cooperative multitasking and classic MacOS did it as well. Preemptive multitasking more efficiently manages processes than cooperative multitasking. (1:42) First point they tackled: A lot of the hardware they talked about such as TV tuners and SCSI connectors were built in for Power Machintoshes sold at that time. Since PCs come in a wide away of configurations, some customers didn't need a TV tuner or Ethernet networking (remember this was 1996) so for someone who didn't need those features, they may want a Macintosh than a PC that costed much less. (3:06) This is unfortunately still the case today where you need to refresh if changes are made. Windows sometimes refreshes, but not all the time. In newer versions of Windows, AutoPlay exists to let the user know Windows has detected a new storage device. For inserting a different disk, what they should have done is eject the disk from the operating system. This tells the OS to save whatever file operations on the disk so it can be safely ejected without any data loss. MacOS also has this function where you drag the disk to the trash to unmount it in OSX. (3:49) An external hard drive and an internal hard drive are completely different markets. I think it was possible to add an internal hard drive in a Mac system at that time but I'm not sure on that. External hard drives are preformatted so they can be used as soon as you connect it to the computer. Internal hard drives are usually not formatted because the consumer may install an operating system or use it as a secondary storage device. But I will say initializing and formatting a disk is much easier in Windows NT than DOS versions of Windows. (5:38) This is a very niche use case where you would want to move a program and all its dependencies onto a new drive. What I would do is save all data on the secondary disk and keep all dependencies on the main drive. It also depends how much disk space your program would require for all the dependencies to work. MacOS still has this feature as most apps downloaded from the internet come in a DMG file where you can drag the application to the applications folder. (6:20) This is something PCs thankfully have solved. Networks have matured a lot since then and during this time period, the internet was growing very rapidly, so some consumers didn't need the internet while some others did. (7:35) A limitation I talked about earlier with cooperative multitasking. I am not sure how Apple did it when MacOS was on a nanokernel but Windows NT does a much better job at handling device drivers. (8:17) Windows now comes with applications such as Services, a more advanced Task Manager, and Event Viewer to help troubleshoot problems. In rare cases, the registry must be edited so this is something that has been improved. (8:37) This is still something related to Windows NT where shortcuts resignate with the original file location. In fact, a lot of operating systems require the shortcut pointing to the file to not be moved, so this point was BS. (9:55) Marketing move. Apple is showing the features of their own OS and their own products. (12:10) This one is interesting because ARM is using RISC and Apple is using that now to power their Mac computers. At the time, PowerPC gave you more performance per watt. In 2006 Intel was starting to win over PowerPC because of the same performance per watt reason. Now it's ARM's turn. (13:20) Windows 98 had improved support for 32 bit application support, but XP made it way better since it was based on the NT kernel. They did mention Windows NT in the video, but a lot of people still relied on DOS applications at the time plus the computers were way weaker and could not run NT. This was also the time where computers were getting faster at an alarming rate. (14:49) That particular Power Macintosh has so much I/O on it which was great for a user that wanted a TV Tuner, Ethernet, and all the bells and whistles, but it was very expensive. This was also the time Apple was in some serious financial trouble. A PowerMac G3 did have some PCIe connectors, but the iMac G3 offered zero expansion, but the iMac was aimed for consumers. And it looks like they are trying to sell the Power Macintosh to professionals. But you also have to consider the majority of consumers are not tech savvy and would be perfectly fine with an iMac G3 or simple Macintosh at that time that did not have those features. (15:03) This has mostly evolved into an accessibility feature. (16:55) Apple still dominates this market. Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are good applications for video editing and music creation. Although I will say DirectX and Windows has evolved greatly. And the transition from DOS to NT definitely helped. (19:35) The gap has narrowed since then because computers were getting faster at a very fast rate. (20:25) This is a BS point. Most people use text editors for editing text, not for editing 3D models. They use a specific program for that. (20:54) Again, you need a high end system for a lot of I/O, and not every buyer of a computer needed those capabilities. (22:50) Of course the Mac can read floppy disks that were initialized with a PC. Because the file system for that floppy disk was FAT, while the file system for Macintosh floppies were usually in a proprietary format. (23:25) PC compatibility cards mostly faded away from existence, mostly because Intel processors got way better support and performance for virtualization. x86 emulation on ARM is hit or miss, but then again, Apple silicon has only been out for a few years, so it will get better overtime. (24:18) Most of the points he went over are features meant for professional users. The funny thing is is the iMac G3 removed all expansion and that was the computer that helped save Apple. It was meant for consumers and Apple also had the PowerMac G3 for people who needed expansion. Whew! That was a long comment. Please reply with your opinions and let me know if I got anything wrong so I can edit this comment.
